Apple’s iPad goes on sale April 3

ipadIf you’ve been jonesing for an iPad, April 3 is the date you can finally satisfy that craving. Apple said today will start selling its ballyhooed tablet computer on that day. Pre-orders begin next week, on March 12.

April 3 is a Saturday, so expect anxious early adopters to line up overnight Friday. There had been rumors afloat that the iPad would go on sale on March 26, and that those camping out would get a free gift. A freebie was not mentioned in Apple’s news release, which refers to the iPad as “magical and revolutionary”.

The models being sold on April 3 will only connect to the Net via Wi-Fi. If you want an iPad that works over AT&T’s 3G network, you’ll have to wait until late April, according to Apple. No firm date was given for 3G model sales, but you will be able to pre-order them on March 12 as well.

Apple unveiled its iPad on Jan. 27, promising the Wi-Fi models would go on sale in 60 days. The April 3 date misses the mark a bit, but not by much.

The April 3 date is only for U.S. sales. Other countries will have to wait until late April.

  • I get pretty excited about saving money, and thanks to the recent economic downturn, everyone else seems to be in the same boat. These tips will help your printer supplies last longer, which saves money and it’s good for the environment besides.

    1. Print in Black and White. Just because you have a color printer doesn’t mean you have to use color every time. In fact, I find that most of what I print looks just fine in black only, which saves on color print cartridges. This is especially important if you have a combined color cartridge, in which you have to replace the whole thing as soon as one of the three colors runs out.
    2. Switch to Fast Draft mode. I lower my printer quality to fast draft as a default, which uses less ink. The prints are noticeably lower quality, but still completely legible – I just have to remember to switch to a higher quality for print-outs for clients or Christmas letters, etc. As a bonus, the printing is a lot faster.
    3. Narrow your margins. Sounds a little nit-picky, but if you regularly print long documents, this can save paper.
    4. Don’t print it. How many times have you printed something when it really wasn’t necessary? You can proofread on your screen, save files in on-line archives instead of file drawers, print just the first page if you don’t need the rest, and use print preview to prevent avoidable re-printing.
    5. Print selection. In most software, including web browsers, you can just print the portion of the page that you need, without having to print a bunch of extra pages. In Internet Explorer, select the text or images you want to print and type CTRL + P or choose File: Print. When the print dialog box appears, make sure to choose Selection in the Page Range section before you click Print.
    6. Use both sides of the paper. Once you’ve used one side of the paper, you can just flip it over and print on the other side: Voila! Green printing… I usually keep this type of paper in a stack next to the printer. If you’re really committed, you can save junk mail from companies and print on the other side. Warning: This could drive your spouse nuts. My husband hates this because invariably he ends up with something private or confidential on the back of something he printed at home and then took to work. Whoops.
    7. Use recycled, refilled, or remanufactured ink cartridges. Any of these will save money, but printer manufacturers say that this can cause problems with your printer. Whether true or not, in my experience, if you call tech support and you are using a recycled dell printer ink cartridge, they are likely to blame that without delving further into the issue. I also noted that about 1 out of every 5 recycled cartridges I tried wouldn’t work at all. So, I do not use either of these methods – I’m just listing it here so that you know the consequences.
    8. Do cost comparisons Good, old-fashioned smart shopping works well – on the internet, just type the part number of your ink cartridge into Google, e.g. hp c8721w. Watch for sales and use coupons, buy in bulk if it’s a good price, look at Costco, etc. I typically find that Costco is the best, so you’re pretty safe choosing that if you don’t have the time to make detailed comparisons. Warning: don’t stock up too far in advance, because many ink cartridges stop working when they are past the expiration date. If this happens, you can try rolling back the date on your computer, but that’s obviously quite a hassle.

  • Canon PIXMA Pro9000 Mark II

Canon PIXMA Pro9000 Mark II Inkjet-Printer.

I bought this Canon PIXMA Pro9000 Mark II Inkjet-Printer last year because I wanted to level-up my brochure and catalogue business. Most of my clients wanted a brochure that featured more product images on it with very little text hype. Clients were also gearing up their marketing strategies by banking on product recall over marketing bylines. This PIXMA Pro9000 Mark II was a bit costly to start with but I decided to invest on it in order to survive a thriving business. I’m glad I did, because I was able to deliver the kind of brochure that my clients wanted, otherwise, I would be out of business by now.

I thought it’s about time that I do this printer a favor by writing a review about it. Not once since I bought it did I encounter any problem. Here are the features I banked on about PIXMA Pro9000 Mark II in order to save my brochure and catalogue business:

    1. It’s a large format printer. It allows me to explore different brochure sizes and allows me to offer custom-sized ones. Printing can accommodate up to 13×19 width sizes. In fact there are two paper trays to support paper feeding, including the heavy stock materials.

    2. Its 8-color ink system has widened the color choices available making products look every inch the same as the actual. The wide array of print settings lets me play with color usage and how I can best present products in their most eye-catching and detailed quality. In fact, my clients were actually delighted with the way the product images came out looking every inch the real thing and will serve its aim to impress instant product recognition or product recall.

    3. The Auto Photo Fix- has given the models’ faces the correct color tones especially useful for brochures that promote cosmetic products. The optimal image correction ability of PIXMA Pro9000 Mark II’s built-in technology makes automatic adjustments to enhance flawless skin tones and features in its most convincing appearance.

    4. The Ambient Light Correction, took away some of the load off my lighting problems whenever I took product photos. It saves me long hours of trying to adjust lighting no end especially when the weather is not agreeable.

    5. It has this energy efficient features of 4in 4 or 2 in 1 printing where I can print multiple pages on a single page. As a business option, this is a great reduction in paper costs and energy. Inks are in individual cartridges making it possible to monitor ink usage, and cuts down on wastes from inherent residue-retention in cartridges.

  • You must be aware of the fact that we cannot live without printers. Especially if you run a large business, you might be completely dependent on printers. Laser printers are ideal for fast and efficient printing. Moreover, they are widely preferred by businesses worldwide. At the same time, it is a bitter fact that laser printers require costly maintenance. This is the reason why most people back off from buying laser printers. However, if you take little care you can easily use your laser printer for a long time. Always make sure that you use the same toner as your printer brand. For instance, a Brother Laser printer will obviously need a Brother toner. Laser printing ink does not smudge easily and you can get cost effective printing when compared to a standard ink jet printer. Finally always make sure that you buy branded printing supplies. For instance if you have a Lexmark printer you need to get your Lexmark toner and other accessories for a branded supplier.

  • It’s hard to come by top quality printing companies these days. With the ever widening reach of the internet local printing businesses are being slowly ousted and replaced by cheaper, internet based companies. Whatever service it is that you’re after, whether it’s leaflet printing, flyers or company banners it is invariably an online company that you will go with. However, this approach doesn’t always yield the best results as you can’t check your product in the shop and only see it for the first time once you’ve paid and it’s been delivered to your home. Often this results in unhappy customers and people are returning to the stores they know best which have either been recommended or have a good reputation in the local area.

This is the case with local County Durham supplier Printmeit. Based in Stanley, they have been supplying businesses, charities and organisations across the UK with low cost flyer printing (A6 flyers are amongst the most popular), brochure printing and leaflet printing for years and have now expanded their services to include other services such as greetings cards and presentation folders. All their designs are custom made and they welcome customers into their office to discuss the design process with them. Try getting that from an internet only business.

  • Many businesses and managers have expressed their concerns about vehicle tracking when it comes to staff relations. The reason many managers have these concerns because they feel that it will decrease morale and staff will feel they are being spied on.

The fact is that some staff will make these types of complaints, but also many will welcome vehicle tracking. This is especially the case for companies that educate staff as to the benefits it can bring to the business both in profits and more importantly to staff operational benefits. Things that can help employees do their job more easily are more often than not very welcome.

If employees have nothing to hide then they have nothing to fear from the tracking systems being installed. Nine out of ten times the staff that complains about having vehicle tracking systems fitted into their work vehicles are the exact staff which are breaking rules or have something to hide. Obviously these employees do not welcome GPS vehicle tracking as will put a stop to their bad working habits or dishonest behaviour.

Remember the benefits of tracking to educate your staff about; less paper work, better communication and a company which is better equipped to survive in these tough times of recession.

  • Universal Phone Charger

A mobile phone charger that will work with all types of handset has been signed off by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). All phone users will be familiar with the adage ‘new phone = new charger’, with the old one being consigned to the back of a drawer or the bottom of a dustbin.

Assuming all the phone companies agree, the new Universal Charger, which features a USB connector, will make things easier for both the customer and the environment. Not only will the charger reduce future electronic waste, it will also incorporate the latest energy efficient technology to reduce standby consumption when phones are recharging.

The charger is described as a ‘common sense’ solution. Although it is not compulsory for phone manufacturers to adopt the device many have shown significant interest and Sony Ericsson have announced that they will launch compatible models in early 2010.

  • Buying the right projector

There are some things to consider when you choose to buy projector. As the name suggests, a projector is used to magnify an image so that it is clearly visible to an audience. Projectors have been used for presentations and meetings and even in school projects since long. However, digital technology has further introduced advanced projectors which use either LCD or DLP technologies. LCD projectors provide a clear display and are best for meetings and presentations since images often have paragraphs or sentences that need to be magnified properly. On the other hand DLP projectors are not bulky and are easier to carry. Such projectors are ideal for school projects which often involve movies. When buying a projector, you need to be sure about your requirements and your budget. If you are still confused you can either research online or ask the person at the store to help you out.
